Teach for America alumni (those finishing their second year of teaching, and beyond) are invited to apply for the TFA-Upperline Summer CS Fellowship. This summer, up to 40 teachers will receive paid in-depth computer science training and support as they gain the technical and pedagogical skills to teach an introductory high school computer science course. We believe that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it - that’s why we’ve structured the fellowship into three steps:

We believe that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it

How the Fellowship Works:

  1. Learn to Code: Teachers will receive online work and mentorship in preparation for their summer bootcamp.
  2. Learn to Teach Code: Spend one week with teachers learning the pedagogy of computer science education.
  3. Teach Code: Spend 4, 6 or 8 weeks getting support and feedback from master instructors as you help teach Upperline’s Summer Classes in New York City.

Upperline Fellows will learn a variety of professional software development skills that they will be able to bring back to their schools after the summer. Fellows will earn a stipend starting at $5,600 for 1 week of training and six weeks of teaching in our summer programs, in addition to hourly pay for learning to code. Additional compensation is available for experienced computer science educators.

Who Are We Looking for?

Upperline fellows are passionate about learning to code, and about empowering students. They come from a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds, but generally they:

  • Have at least two years of full-time teaching experience in any subject with high school or middle school students.

  • Are passionate about learning Upperline’s curriculum in Ruby, HTML/CSS/Javascript, and Swift.

  • Are excited to develop their teaching craft and pedagogy.

  • Have a mindset that is highly reflective, and are extremely receptive to feedback.

  • Hold a strong belief in the capabilities of all students.

  • Are able to collaborate productively with a diverse team of individuals to produce incredible results.

  • Want to bring computer science education back to their classrooms.

Already Know How To Code?

For teachers with programming experience already, we encourage you to apply for our Upperline Instructor position, where we'll put you on the fast-track to teaching with us. We'll still want you to join us for the weeklong bootcamp where you'll learn more about teaching, classroom management, and our pedagogy.
